Be Mine - A Tale of Conversational Sweet Hearts
Posted by Stephaney Abilon on
What Valentines Day would be complete without those sugary little conversational hearts that surface every year around this holiday? You may recall: BE MINE, HOT STUFF, XXX OOO, and LET'S KISS as favorites!
First introduced in 1902 by NECCO Candy Co, by 1990 some sayings were retired and others updated to reflect the times such as; High Five, Txt Me, and #Love have replaced my personal favorites Sweet Pea and Love Bug. Yet the old sentiments of Be Mine, Hold Hands, and the ever-popular Marry Me are still in existence and sayings change from year to year. Nearly 100,000 pounds of these hearts are made daily and sold out in less than six months.
In literature Anne of Green Gables (1908), Gilbert attempts to give a pink candy heart with the words, "You Are Sweet", to Anne, who promptly grinds it under her heel. The hearts make another appearance in Little House in the Big Woods, (1932) when a shopkeeper gives Laura and her sister a piece of white heart candy.
Celebrate your friends and beloveds by slipping them a little conversational heart. Be Mine Sweet Pea?
